Blog Spotlight - Critical Distance

I'm still working my way through the last of my video game library books, so the intended blog post about the final fourth book in that pile is still on the way. But for today, it seems fitting to highlight this new-to-me blog that is relevant to both my current video game writing kick and the blog-focused spirit of the current Blaugust festivities!

Critical Distance is a community blog started in 2009 that provides a much-needed hub of games criticism. With the blog's tagline being, "Where is all the good writing about games?", the site does exactly what it says on the tin and offers thoughtfully curated round-ups of games criticism across the internet. These can include blog posts or articles from larger or more formal publications, and at one point it seems they also curated a collection of round-ups for video essays, too. From the most recent weekly round-up of video game writing from August 3rd, I've already got at least three fresh tabs open for new pieces and game-related sites to check out! Perhaps some of these pieces are even from others in the general blogosphere/Blaugust sphere!

It's wonderful, and very impressive, to see that this blog has been around for over 15 years and is still ongoing today. It's interesting to think that it predates all of the officially published-in-book-form video game literature I've been delving into from the library as of late, which have all been released within the last decade or so. I can only imagine the culture shifts and complete transformations in the video gaming landscape that a blog like Critical Distance has been witness to throughout all these years.
